Someone was ‘paid to kill targeted victim’ in mass shooting that killed 4, injured 17, police say
“Birmingham Mass Shooting Leaves 4 Dead and 17 Injured, Police Suspect a Paid Hit”
Birmingham, Alabama, was rocked by a tragic mass shooting late Saturday night, September 21, 2024, that left four people dead and 17 others injured. The horrific event occurred around 11 p.m. in the Five Points South area, specifically on the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. The Birmingham Police Department responded to a call about gunfire, and when officers arrived, they found a gruesome scene.
Three victims—two men and one woman—were found lying unresponsive on the sidewalk. Sadly, all three were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth victim was later declared dead after being transported to UAB Hospital. The police have identified three of the four people killed: 21-year-old Anitra Holloman from Bessemer, 27-year-old Tahj Booker, and 27-year-old Carlos McCain, both from Birmingham. The identity of the fourth victim, a male, is still pending.
UAB Hospital reported receiving 12 victims in total, including one of the deceased. Four of these victims are currently undergoing treatment, with conditions ranging from good to critical. The other victims from the shooting were transported to various hospitals across the city, leaving a total of 21 people who were shot that night.
According to police, the suspects arrived in a vehicle, stepped out, and began firing multiple rounds at a group of people on the sidewalk. The attackers then fled the scene in their vehicle. Authorities believe this was not a random act of violence but rather an isolated incident where a targeted individual was caught in the crossfire. Sadly, many innocent people were also shot during the chaos.
In a news conference on Sunday morning, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond revealed shocking information: they believe someone was paid to carry out the killing. The suspected target is believed to be one of the four victims who lost their lives. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify the person who was the intended victim.
More than 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene, and it has been confirmed that fully automatic weapons were used in the attack. Bullet holes were also found in nearby buildings, highlighting the widespread destruction caused by the shooting.
This incident marks yet another tragic example of automatic weapons being used on the streets of Birmingham. Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed deep concern during the news conference, stating, “This is not the first time in 2024 where we’ve seen this style of weapons and the number of bullets being used in our streets. We must come together as a community to take these shooters off our streets.”
As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Birmingham Police Chief Thurmond and Mayor Woodfin stressed the importance of community cooperation in solving the case. They emphasized that justice for the victims is a shared responsibility. “We owe it to the victims to do everything we can to take these killers off our streets,” Mayor Woodfin added.
The Birmingham Police Department has set up a special QR code that allows people to submit information and evidence related to the case. They are also reviewing video surveillance from nearby cameras in hopes of identifying the suspects. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Birmingham Police Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or dial 911. For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers is available at 205-254-7777.
The community is still reeling from the tragedy, and the investigation continues as police work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice. The mass shooting in Birmingham is yet another heartbreaking reminder of the violence that plagues many cities, and the need for stronger efforts to prevent such senseless acts.
