We’re only halfway through 2024, but we’ve already seen an incredible number of iconic world records broken. From the world’s tallest dog to the tiniest robots from Japan, here are the must-see records of the year so far.
Longest Hair
Aliia Nasyrova from Ukraine, now living in Slovakia, has been confirmed as having the world’s longest hair on a living person, measuring 257.33 cm (8 ft 5.3 in). Aliia has never had a proper haircut and takes 30 minutes to wash her hair weekly, with drying taking up to 24 hours.
Oldest Man
After the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez from Venezuela in April, 111-year-old John Alfred Tinniswood from England became the oldest living man. Born on August 26, 1912, John resides in a care home in Southport and attributes his longevity to “pure luck.”
Longest Plank (Female)
DonnaJean Wilde, a 58-year-old grandmother from Canada, achieved the longest time in an abdominal plank position (female) with a time of 4 hr 30 min. The retired high school vice principal said the last hour was the most challenging.
Heaviest Blueberry
A blueberry weighing 20.4 g (0.71 oz) was confirmed as the heaviest ever recorded. It was grown in Australia by Costa Group horticulturists at Costa’s berry farm in Corindi, New South Wales. The blueberry is from their “Eterna” variety.
First Multiple Amputee to Climb Everest
Former Para athlete Andrea Lanfri from Italy became the first multiple amputee to climb Everest. Despite losing seven fingers and both legs below the knee to meningitis in 2015, Andrea conquered the mountain with his friend, Luca, over two and a half months.
Largest Tongue Circumference
Sacha Feiner from Belgium and Jenny DuVander from the USA set records for the largest tongue circumference. Sacha’s tongue measures 17 cm (6.69 in), while Jenny’s measures 13.25 cm (5.21 in).
Greatest Height Difference in a Married Couple
Jessica Burns-McDonnell, standing at 177.8 cm (5 ft 10 in), and Larry McDonnell, who has diastrophic dwarfism and is 91.44 cm (3 ft) tall, have a height difference of 86.36 cm (2 ft 9 in), earning them the record for the greatest height difference in a married couple.
Widest Wig
Helen Williams from Nigeria claimed the record for the widest wig, measuring 3.65 m (11 ft 11 in) wide. The wig is an inch wider than the length of a Mini Cooper car and had to be proven wearable.
Tallest Dog
A Great Dane named Kevin, measuring 0.97 m (3 ft 2 in) from feet to withers, was recently announced as the world’s tallest male dog. Sadly, Kevin passed away shortly after setting the record.
Smallest Humanoid Robot
Mitsuya Tatsuhiko from Japan built the world’s smallest humanoid robot, standing at just 57.67 mm (2.27 in). This tiny robot is slightly bigger than a golf tee and less than half the size of the previous record-holder.
