The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) expanded a Salmonella-related charcuterie meat recall, now including Costco’s “Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta.” The outbreak, with 23 new illnesses and five hospitalizations, totals 47 cases and 10 hospitalizations across 22 states, likely undercounted. The Washington State Department of Health discovered illnesses linked to the Fratelli Beretta brand. The recall covers Sam’s Club’s “Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler” and Costco’s “Fratelli Beretta,” urging disposal of affected products and cleaning surfaces in contact.
The Busseto Sampler at Sam’s Club comprises prosciutto, sweet soppressata, and dry coppa, while the Costco product includes black pepper-coated dry salami, Italian dry salami, dry coppa, and prosciutto. CDC investigators are probing for additional affected items. Salmonella symptoms include bloody diarrhea, fever over 102°F, excessive vomiting, signs of dehydration, and stomach cramps. Though recovery is common within a week, severe cases, especially in vulnerable groups, may require medical attention or hospitalization. The recall emphasizes public health precautions, urging vigilance in handling and disposing of implicated products.
