The deceased worker has been identified as 30-year-old Demonte Sherrill, a father of four. However, the Charlotte Fire Department has not confirmed any deaths at this time. Another construction worker is still missing following the fire, which broke out on Thursday morning. Fifteen workers, including a crane operator, were successfully rescued by over 90 firefighters who responded to the five-alarm blaze in the SouthPark neighborhood.
The fire spread rapidly, posing challenges for the firefighters. On two occasions, firefighters became trapped and required assistance from their colleagues to escape the blaze. The crane operator was injured but the injuries were not life-threatening. Images from the scene show tall flames and a yellow crane amid large clouds of smoke. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined by investigators at the scene, although witnesses reported that it started in a parking garage where foam insulation was being installed.
The tragic incident has left the family of Demonte Sherrill devastated. His mother, Onita Sherrill, expressed her shock and numbness over the situation. The fire department commended the bravery and quick action of their personnel, highlighting their efforts in rescuing the trapped firefighters. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police requested that people refrain from calling 911 except in emergencies to ensure the fire department could focus on battling the blaze.
