Celebrating 77 Years of Love and Marriage: Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s Remarkable Journey

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s Remarkable Journey

Former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary on July 7, 2023. Their marriage is the longest of any presidential couple in history. The couple met in Georgia when Rosalynn was a baby, but they got to know each other better when Jimmy returned from the U.S. Navy Academy. They were married in 1946. Jimmy Carter resigned from the military in 1953 and they started working together in the farm supply business. Carter’s involvement in politics didn’t deter their partnership, and Rosalynn often provided him with valuable advice.

Jimmy Carter’s political career began in 1962 when he won a seat in the Georgia Senate. He went on to become the governor of Georgia in 1971 and was elected as the 39th President of the United States in 1976. During his presidency, Rosalynn Carter became a prominent advocate for mental health and played an active role in shaping mental health policies.

After leaving the White House, the Carters continued their humanitarian efforts and co-founded The Carter Center in 1982. They remained active in various causes, including Habitat for Humanity, and enjoyed hobbies together such as playing tennis, hiking, cycling, fishing, and bird watching.

Both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are in their 90s. Jimmy Carter has been in home hospice care since February, while Rosalynn Carter has dementia. Despite their health challenges, their long-lasting marriage is attributed to open communication and shared Christian faith. The couple’s legacy has garnered widespread support, respect, and love.
