The Law Commission of India has initiated a consultation process on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and is seeking feedback from the general public and religious organizations. The commission has set a deadline of 30 days for the submission of views and feedback. This new consultation process follows previous attempts by the 21st Law Commission of India to gather input on the UCC through appeals, questionnaires, and public notices.
Considering the passage of more than three years since the issuance of the initial consultation paper, the 22nd Law Commission of India has decided to revisit the subject due to its relevance, importance, and the impact of various court orders. The commission received significant responses to the consultation paper on “Reforms of Family Law” issued by the 21st Law Commission on August 31, 2018.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to replace personal laws derived from religious scriptures and customs with a uniform set of rules applicable to all citizens of the country. It covers matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed its commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code within the framework of the Constitution, emphasizing the principle of “Justice for All and Appeasement for None.”
