How will history judge President Trump?
Americans’ perception of Trump’s presidency has evolved positively over time, a recent poll suggests. Initially seen as a failure by the majority, public opinion has shifted dramatically, now acknowledging a notable success in his tenure. Back in 2017, merely a quarter of respondents labeled his presidency as successful, with a significant 68% deeming it a failure. Fast forward four years, and the narrative has altered significantly. A survey conducted shortly before his departure from office revealed that 41% regarded his presidency as a success, while 55% still held onto the view of it being a failure. Now, in a recent CNN poll, the tide has turned even further, with a striking 55% of respondents viewing Trump’s first term as successful, showcasing a significant shift in public sentiment over seven years.
This shift in perception isn’t isolated. History shows similar patterns, with many past presidents experiencing increased favorability post-presidency. A Gallup poll from July highlights this trend, indicating that nearly all modern presidents received higher retrospective approval ratings compared to their in-office ratings. Only Nixon and Obama didn’t see significant increases.
The same poll also sheds light on President Joe Biden’s current standing, with 39% viewing his first term as successful, while the majority, 61%, consider it a failure. This reflects a slight dip from earlier polls conducted in 2022, suggesting a nuanced view of his presidency among Americans.
