The jury for actor Kevin Spacey’s sexual assault trial has been sworn in at a London court. Spacey, a two-time Academy Award winner, is facing charges related to allegations of sexually assaulting four men dating back as far as two decades ago. The trial’s outcome could have significant implications, potentially leading to imprisonment for Spacey or a revival of his career.
Spacey appeared in court wearing a dark blue suit, light blue shirt, and pink tie, and confirmed his identity as Kevin Spacey Fowler. Justice Mark Wall acknowledged the potential jurors’ familiarity with Spacey’s name and films, to which Spacey nodded and smiled.
Fourteen jurors, including two alternates, were selected without objection, while the remaining 13 were excused. The jurors were a mix of men and women, dressed in both business and casual attire.
Spacey, who is currently out on bail and has residences in London and the U.S., arrived at court accompanied by his manager. He expressed optimism about the trial’s outcome, suggesting that an acquittal could help rejuvenate his career, which has been marred by previous sexual misconduct allegations.
The charges against Spacey involve incidents that allegedly occurred between 2001 and 2013 when he lived in Britain and served as the artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre. The actor’s professional downfall began during the #MeToo movement, leading to his removal from the TV series “House of Cards” and the film “All the Money in the World.”
Despite his recent absence from the screen, Spacey has had a recent film role in an Italian production and received a lifetime achievement award from Italy’s National Cinema Museum. He expressed gratitude for the recognition and praised the organizers for their support of artistic achievement.
The trial is expected to last four weeks, with opening statements scheduled for Friday.
