The letter, signed by eleven current and former OpenAI employees and two from Google DeepMind, is a rare public declaration about the potential dangers of AI. Among the signatories are individuals with previous experience at other prominent AI firms such as Anthropic. The letter stresses the need for a “right to warn about artificial intelligence.”

Lack of Safety Oversight

The document outlines concerns that AI companies hold extensive non-public knowledge about their systems’ capabilities and risks but lack robust obligations to share this critical information with governments or civil society. The letter points out that, in the absence of effective government oversight, employees are often the only ones who can hold these corporations accountable. However, stringent confidentiality agreements frequently prevent them from voicing their concerns. “Broad confidentiality agreements block us from voicing our concerns, except to the very companies that may be failing to address these issues,” the letter states.

Recent reports indicate that companies like OpenAI have employed aggressive measures to silence employees. Last week, Vox revealed that OpenAI required departing employees to sign highly restrictive non-disparagement and non-disclosure agreements or forfeit their vested equity. Following the backlash, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologized and promised to revise these procedures.

Resignations Highlight Safety Issues

The letter follows the recent resignations of two prominent OpenAI figures, co-founder Ilya Sutskever and key safety researcher Jan Leike. Leike, after leaving, accused OpenAI of abandoning its safety culture in favor of “shiny products.” The open letter reiterates these sentiments, accusing AI companies of lacking transparency in their operations.
