Twitter Accuses Rival Threads Of Stealing Trade Secrets, Threatens To Sue
The app Threads, launched by Meta to compete with Twitter, has encountered legal issues shortly after its release. With over 30 million users since its launch, Threads has been threatened with a lawsuit by Twitter, alleging infringement on its intellectual property rights. Elon Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, wrote a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing the company of unlawfully misappropriating Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property. The letter claimed that Meta had hired numerous former Twitter employees who still had access to Twitter’s trade secrets and confidential information.
Twitter expressed its intention to enforce its intellectual property rights and demanded that Meta cease using any Twitter trade secrets or highly confidential information. In response, Musk tweeted that competition is acceptable but cheating is not.
Meta defended itself by stating that no one on the Threads engineering team had previously worked for Twitter. The company’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, emphasized that former Twitter employees were not part of the team.
Threads poses a significant challenge to Musk-owned Twitter, which has faced various potential competitors but has yet to be replaced as one of the world’s largest social media platforms.
It is worth noting that Meta’s other platforms, Instagram and Facebook, have a history of emulating features from emerging internet rivals. For instance, Reels imitated TikTok’s viral video app, while Stories followed the success of Snapchat’s disappearing posts.
