Thousands of Twitter users experienced difficulties accessing the social media site on Saturday. The outage, which affected several countries, led to users being unable to view the site or encountering delays. “Rate Limit Exceeded” and “#TwitterDown” became trending topics on the app in the US. Outage reports began around 8 am EST and continued to increase throughout the morning, with over 7,400 reports of outages recorded on DownDetector.
Users, including CNN journalists, reported that their Twitter feeds were not loading and received error messages stating they were rate limited or unable to retrieve tweets. In response to the issues, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, announced temporary limits on the platform to address data scraping and system manipulation. Verified accounts are now limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts have a limit of 600 posts per day. Musk plans to increase these limits in the near future.
The connection problems and rate limits frustrated many users, leading to trending topics such as “Wtf twitter” and “Thanks Elon” on the platform. It should be noted that Twitter recently restricted access to its platform for users not logged into an account, although it is unclear whether this change was intentional or a glitch. The majority of the reported issues occurred on the website, followed by the app.
Elon Musk is working on improving the platform’s performance and attracting advertisers by appointing a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, following an exodus of advertisers from Twitter.
