Netflix’s $100 Million JLo Blockbuster Is Reviewing Worse Than ‘Rebel Moon’
Netflix’s latest $100 million action blockbuster, “Atlas,” starring Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu, is performing poorly with critics, receiving an 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which features Lopez as a data analyst combating a rogue AI, is being compared to the video game Titanfall in its thematic elements. Despite Netflix’s history of investing heavily in big action films, “Atlas” joins other poorly reviewed titles like “Rebel Moon” and “Heart of Stone.”
While previous Netflix blockbusters such as “Red Notice” and “Heart of Stone” have achieved significant viewership despite low critical acclaim, “Atlas” seems to be a clear misfire. The movie’s audience score is only marginally better than its critical reception, standing at 59%. Forbes’ Paul Tassi highlights that the film’s marketing, particularly the trailers, did not resonate well, and Lopez’s performance felt out of place.
Given the current feedback, the prospects for a sequel appear bleak, especially in light of Netflix’s inconsistent approach to continuing its blockbuster series. The platform prioritizes viewership over ratings, but poor word-of-mouth could hinder “Atlas” from achieving sustained popularity.
