In 1976, I was a ninth-grade student at Jagriti-Niketan School in Jammu, where I witnessed a heart-wrenching incident that left a lasting impact on my friend Rajesh. Rajesh had an infatuation with a popular classmate known for her beauty, which ultimately led to him being beaten by the principal with a hockey stick in front of outsiders.
As a daily routine, the whole school would assemble in the morning just at the beginning of the school activities and the prayers started with the assembly. After the prayers, some students would come one by one and read out the news of the day. If some important message or notification would be there-that was read out by the school headteacher to the assembled students.

It all happened during the school’s daily morning assembly, where we would pray, and students would read out the news of the day. After the assembly, the principal called three students from our class and took them to his room. Later, we found out that the principal had beaten Rajesh with a hockey stick in front of outsiders, leaving us all worried about his well-being.
Rajesh’s Infatuation with a Classmate
We learned that Rajesh had developed an attachment to his classmate and expressed his feelings to us. Unfortunately, her father saw an enlarged picture of his daughter on the main street wall, which caused him great disturbance. He complained to the school principal and named Rajesh as the culprit, resulting in Rajesh being beaten by the principal.

When Rajesh returned to the class, we could tell that something had happened as he had tears in his eyes. It was only later when the teacher left the class that we went to Rajesh to ask him about the matter.

He later did his research in chemistry and got a doctorate in the same from Chandigarh Punjab University. But alas, he did not live any longer and died at a very young age and the reason for his death is still not exactly known.

It’s easy to feel rejected and hurt when someone you have feelings for doesn’t reciprocate them. However, it’s important to remember that their rejection is not a reflection of your worth or value as a person.
