The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, featuring prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will contest from Varanasi, and key ministers like Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. The list comprises 195 candidates, including 34 Union ministers and notable personalities like Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Significant changes include the replacement of 33 sitting MPs with new faces across various states. The BJP’s candidate selection spans multiple states, with a focus on Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Noteworthy additions include Bhojpuri singer and actor Pawan Singh and paralympian Devendra Jhajharia. The inclusion of 28 women and 47 young leaders reflects a diverse candidate pool. Additionally, controversial decisions such as fielding Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son was involved in a fatal incident, add complexity to the electoral landscape.
