The Washington Wizards have agreed to trade Chris Paul, the future Hall of Fame point guard, to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jordan Poole, according to sources. As part of the deal, the Wizards will also receive a protected 2030 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick from the Warriors. This trade comes after the Wizards recently sent Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns for a package that included Paul.
Under the leadership of new president of basketball operations Michael Winger, the Wizards have been undergoing a complete roster overhaul. In addition to Paul, they acquired Landry Shamet, first-round pick swaps, second-round picks, and cash from the Suns. As for the Warriors, Paul’s arrival will provide them with another offensive threat alongside Stephen Curry.
The trade between the Wizards and Warriors was delayed to allow the Wizards to find a third team to include in the deal. Ultimately, it was Golden State that became the third team, and Paul will join them after years of facing them in the playoffs. Paul, 38 years old, is expected to play a reserve role in his 19th NBA season.
The trade also has financial implications, as Paul has an expiring $30 million contract, while Poole has four years and $140 million remaining on his extension. This move allows the Warriors to free up cap space as they navigate the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
Additionally, the Wizards made other moves, including sending Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics and acquiring point guard Tyus Jones from the Memphis Grizzlies. Kyle Kuzma, a forward for the Wizards, has declined his player option and will become an unrestricted free agent.
