Major Highway Collapse
On June 11, 2023, a vehicle fire occurred under I-95 near the Cottman Avenue exit in Northeast Philadelphia, resulting in a partial collapse of the highway. Preliminary reports suggest that a tanker truck was involved in the fire, leading to the closure of I-95 in both directions in the affected area. The Philadelphia Fire Department successfully brought the fire under control.
Multiple City and state agencies are actively responding to address the impact on residents and travelers affected by the road closure. Additional details about the incident and response are expected to be shared as they become available.
Officials provided an update at 5 p.m. regarding the incident response. SEPTA, the local transit authority, is increasing its capacity and services to accommodate affected travelers and encourage them to use public transportation as an alternative means of travel.
All lanes of I-95 between Woodhaven and Aramingo exits are currently closed, and some surrounding streets are also closed to facilitate the emergency response. These closures may change as the response efforts continue, and travelers are advised to follow local news and PennDOT’s Twitter account or website for updates (pa.gov/i95updates).
Residents should expect delays and plan alternative travel routes, especially for their weekday commute. Complimentary parking is available at certain PPA-operated SEPTA train station lots until further notice. Trash and recycling collections should proceed as usual, although residents in the northeast area of the city should anticipate delays. The Streets Department is assessing the impact on collection routes and providing updates on Twitter.
Detour routes for I-95 Southbound and Northbound are provided, and the website pa.gov/i95updates offers the latest information on detours and closures.
To stay informed, residents are encouraged to follow the Office of Emergency Management and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Twitter, sign up for emergency alerts by texting ReadyPhila to 888-777, and visit pa.gov/i95updates for the latest updates on detours and closures.
