Universal Pictures is reviving The Mummy franchise with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning to lead the new film. The directing team Radio Silence, known for Ready or Not and the recent Scream movies, will helm the project.
Fraser starred in the original Mummy trilogy from 1999 to 2008, while Weisz appeared in the first two films. Talks for their return began soon after Fraser’s Oscar-winning performance in The Whale in 2022.
Producers Sean Daniel and the late James Jacks created the first trilogy. Daniel returns for the new film, joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment, who have worked with Radio Silence on Scream 5, Scream 6, and Abigail.
The original 1999 movie, directed by Stephen Sommers, mixed action, romance, and horror. Fraser played a daring adventurer who teamed up with a spirited librarian, portrayed by Weisz, to explore Egypt’s tombs. Their quest awakened a powerful ancient priest, setting off the supernatural saga. The movie grossed over $422 million worldwide and made Fraser a global star.
The sequel is not expected to reboot the story but may skip the events of the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in which Maria Bello replaced Weisz. The new script is written by David Coggeshall.
Fraser’s latest film, Rental Family, opens November 21. Weisz recently starred in Amazon’s Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow.
Radio Silence’s next release, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, premieres in April 2026 under Searchlight Pictures. Universal has not yet announced the release date for The Mummy sequel.
