Diplomatic tensions escalates between India and Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has intensified a diplomatic dispute with India by reiterating his accusation that “Indian government agents” were involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau claimed that Canada had shared these “credible allegations” with India several weeks prior, expressing a desire for constructive engagement to resolve the matter. However, India swiftly denied these allegations, highlighting the absence of specific information from Canada and raising concerns about politically motivated hate crimes and violence.
The dispute escalated with reciprocal measures, including the expulsion of diplomats, leading to a major diplomatic crisis. India suspended visa services due to perceived “security threats” to its diplomatic missions in Canada, while also accusing Canada of interfering in its internal affairs and requesting a reduction in Canadian diplomats on Indian soil.
Furthermore, both nations issued travel advisories and expelled a senior diplomat from the other side. The United States, through Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urged cooperation between India and Canada and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation.
This diplomatic row follows earlier tensions stemming from Khalistan supporters’ attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Canada and Canada’s subsequent postponement of a trade mission to India. Canada’s significant Sikh expatriate population has been a focal point, with concerns about rising extremism and Khalistani activities, including protests and threats targeting Indian diplomats.
