At least two people have died, and more than a dozen have been hospitalized following a listeria outbreak connected to deli meat sold at various U.S. deli counters, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced. The outbreak, which has affected people across 12 states, highlights the ongoing risks associated with foodborne illnesses.
Rising Toll of Listeria Outbreak
Twenty-eight individuals have been hospitalized due to this outbreak. The CDC cautions that the actual number of cases may be higher since milder infections often go unreported and untreated. The largest number of confirmed cases has been reported in New York, with seven, and Maryland, with six. Tragically, the two fatalities were residents of Illinois and New Jersey.
Deli Meat at the Center of the Outbreak
The CDC’s investigation indicates that the outbreak is linked to deli meats purchased at various supermarkets and deli counters. However, there have been no reports of illness from prepackaged deli meats. The agency is still gathering information to pinpoint the contaminated products, and no recalls have been issued yet. For safety, the CDC recommends avoiding deli meats from delis unless they are thoroughly heated before consumption.
Understanding Listeria
Listeria is a serious bacterial infection that poses a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable populations. Each year in the U.S., around 1,600 people contract listeria, resulting in approximately 260 deaths. The bacteria can cause severe infections, especially in pregnant women, older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.
Recent Ice Cream Recalls Due to Listeria
This outbreak is the second significant listeria scare this summer. In June, a Maryland-based food manufacturer recalled over 60 ice cream products nationwide after potential listeria contamination. Among the recalled items were popular treats like Chipwich Vanilla Chocolate Chip ice cream sandwiches, Jeni’s Mint Chocolate Truffle pie ice cream sandwiches, and Hershey’s Cookies & Cream Polar Bear ice cream sandwiches.
The CDC’s latest warning serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the potential dangers of foodborne illnesses. As investigations continue, the agency urges consumers to remain vigilant and follow recommended guidelines to protect their health.
