Fast-rising pop sensation Chappell Roan made a spectacular debut on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” Thursday. Clad in a striking feathered black outfit for her chat with Fallon, she later performed her latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” in another feather-adorned ensemble.

Roan’s performance was a vivid showcase of her formidable vocal range, especially during the final “I told you so!” segment. The performance took place in a surreal garden-like setting, beginning and ending with Roan singing while seated on a throne shaped like a white swan.

Vibrant Interview and Performance Highlights

The interview marked Roan’s first appearance on late-night TV and was lively from the start. Fallon began by showing a photo of a young Roan performing onstage years ago before a small audience. Roan recalled the event as “this weird gay festival,” and said it was the first time she performed “Pink Pony Club” publicly, referencing her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess.”

Fallon then displayed a photo from her headline-grabbing performance at New York’s Governors Ball festival earlier this month. The audience erupted in applause as Roan humorously remarked, “It feels like I was right all along,” but then modestly added, “I felt kind of like I’d made it already, when people showed up to my concerts a few years ago, and this is the cherry on top.”

Discussing her unique style, a fair question given her dramatic feathered dress and bold makeup, Roan credited her stylist, Genesis Webb. She said, “We pull from drag, horror movies, burlesque, theater … I love looking pretty and scary, or pretty and tacky — or just not pretty, I love that too.”

Acknowledging Inspirations and Fans

Fallon also mentioned Roan’s Coachella performance in April, where she declared, “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” This quote has since been echoed by SZA on Instagram and labelmate Sabrina Carpenter, who covered “Good Luck, Babe!” on the BBC. Roan acknowledged her inspiration from veteran drag performer Sasha Colby, who once said, “I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen.”

When Roan mentioned Colby’s name, a woman in the audience whooped, prompting Roan to quip, “There’s gay people here!” Roan added, “That [quote] just hit me through the heart, and I hope some day Sasha watches me and hears that.”

With three songs currently in the Billboard Hot 100 and multiple festival appearances lined up for the summer, Roan’s “Fallon” appearance demonstrated her rapid rise in the music industry. This comes just four months after her TV debut on “Colbert,” highlighting her swift ascent to stardom.
