Xi arrives for China’s massive military parade flanked by Putin and Kim – BBC News
China put on a massive show of strength in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on Wednesday, marking 80 years since the end of World War II. The military parade featured thousands of troops, advanced stealth fighters, tanks, and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
President Xi Jinping, dressed in a grey Mao suit, presided over the event. From the Gate of Heavenly Peace, he addressed more than 10,000 members of the People’s Liberation Army, Navy, and Air Force. Xi emphasized that China remains committed to “peaceful development,” adding that the world faces a choice between “peace or war, dialogue or confrontation.”
The parade had a high-profile guest list, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. After greeting foreign leaders and Chinese veterans, Xi toured Tiananmen Square in a vehicle before the grand display began.
China’s most advanced weaponry was showcased, including DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The spectacle also included a dramatic flyover by the Chinese Air Force, with banners reading “Justice will prevail” and “Peace will prevail.”
Political experts say the event was more than just a military show. According to Ian Chong, a political scientist from the National University of Singapore, Xi wanted to highlight China’s rise as a global power under his leadership and send a message that Beijing cannot be isolated, especially in the face of U.S. pressure.
The parade reinforced Xi’s vision of China as a strong, influential nation—one that seeks global recognition while projecting unity and power at home.
