“Yamuna River Flooding in Delhi: Rising Waters, Emergency Measures, and Evacuations”

The Yamuna river in Delhi crossed the highest flood record of 207.49 metres yesterday at 1 pm.

The water level in the Yamuna River in Delhi has risen further, causing flooding in several areas. At 6 am today, the water level reached 208.41 meters, three meters above the danger mark. The flooding has affected homes, roads, and important areas near the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Delhi Assembly.

The Hathnikund barrage in Haryana continues to release water into the river, leading to the rising water levels. The Arvind Kejriwal government had requested the central government to intervene and stop the water discharge, but the center stated that the excess water from the barrage had to be released. The barrage itself has filled up due to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, causing significant destruction.

The flood situation has resulted in immense hardships for the people living near the river. Many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, and gathering in vulnerable areas has been banned. The Nigambodh Ghat cremation ground and the Ring Road in the Civil Lines area are among the affected locations. However, the Central Water Commission has stated that the water flow from the Haryana barrage is expected to decrease from 2 pm onwards.

To address the flood situation and carry out rescue operations, 12 teams of the National Disaster Response Force are actively involved. Despite not receiving heavy rainfall in recent days, Delhi has experienced a significant increase in the water level of the Yamuna River due to the discharge from Haryana. This year’s monsoon has brought the highest rainfall to Delhi in decades, leading to the current flood situation.
