Diane Lane Responds Gracefully to Jennifer Lopez’s Regret Over Turning Down “Unfaithful” Role

Diane Lane Reacts to Jennifer Lopez Saying She Turned Down ‘Unfaithful’

Diane Lane has shared her calm and thoughtful response to Jennifer Lopez’s recent regret about passing on the lead role in Unfaithful (2002).

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight on October 20, Lane, now 60, addressed Lopez’s comments made during her October 15 conversation with Howard Stern. Lopez told Stern that rejecting the role in the erotic thriller “haunts me.” Lane, who eventually played the part, received her first Academy Award nomination for the performance.

“I didn’t hear that interview,” Lane said when asked about Lopez’s remarks. “But I’m glad to hear it. It was somebody’s moment, and it was my turn.”

In Unfaithful, Lane portrayed Connie, a married woman who begins an affair with a younger man named Paul, played by Olivier Martinez. Her husband Edward was portrayed by Richard Gere. The film, directed by Adrian Lyne, earned praise for its emotional depth and complex portrayal of desire and guilt. Lane’s performance stood out that year, though Nicole Kidman won the Oscar for The Hours.

Speaking fondly about the film’s director, Lane said, “I just saw Adrian Lyne, and it’s like a Barry White song—you know how it’s gonna go. I could sign up for that.” Lyne has since directed only one film, Deep Water (2022), starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas.

Lopez explained that she had initially turned down Unfaithful because she “didn’t think the script was good at the time.” Years later, she admitted that decision still lingers in her mind.

When asked if she has any similar career regrets, Lane replied, “You’d have to ask me the night before so I can think about it.” She added, “We all share those moments. That’s what friends are for—we laugh about the exchangeability of our experiences and just roll with the punches.”

Lane’s next project, Anniversary, will hit theaters on October 29.
