Elon Musk says he has created a new US political party
Elon Musk has just shaken up U.S. politics again — this time by announcing a brand-new political party: the America Party. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the announcement on his platform, X (formerly Twitter), during the July 4 weekend.
Why Musk Started the America Party
Musk says the new party aims to “give you back your freedom.” He believes too many Americans are stuck between the two traditional political parties and wants to offer a third option — one that speaks to the “80% in the middle.”
In a post, he explained how the party could work by targeting a few key House and Senate seats to become a “deciding vote” on controversial issues. The idea is to disrupt the razor-thin margins in Congress and push for what he sees as smarter, more independent decisions.
What Sparked the Feud with Trump?
The move comes after a very public fallout with President Donald Trump. The tension escalated when Trump signed the “Big Beautiful Bill” on July 4 — a massive spending package Musk heavily criticized.
Musk called the bill “debt slavery” and “pork-filled”, claiming it adds trillions to the national debt and eliminates incentives for electric vehicles. Trump fired back on his Truth Social platform, saying Musk has gone “completely off the rails” and mocked the idea of a third political party, claiming they’ve never succeeded in U.S. history.
To add fuel to the fire, Trump even hinted that the government might consider deporting Musk, a naturalized citizen originally from South Africa.
Who’s Supporting Musk?
Despite Trump’s criticism, Musk isn’t standing alone. Billionaire Mark Cuban showed support with celebratory emojis and offered to help him get on ballots nationwide. Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci also expressed interest, inviting Musk to discuss the new party.
Musk had also run a poll on July 4 asking X users if they wanted “independence” from the two-party system. Out of 1.25 million participants, about 65% said yes — a strong signal that there’s public appetite for something new.
What’s Next for Musk and Tesla?
While Musk’s political ambitions are making headlines, some analysts are concerned. Wall Street voices, including Tesla bull Dan Ives, warn that Musk’s political drama could distract from Tesla’s core business. In fact, Baird analysts recently downgraded Tesla stock, citing uncertainty caused by Musk’s ongoing feud with Trump.
It’s not the first time Musk has dabbled in politics, but launching a full-blown political party? That’s next level. Whether the America Party takes off or fizzles remains to be seen — but one thing’s certain: Elon Musk knows how to keep the spotlight.
