Elon Musk (Chief Technology Officer X) conference at the 71st edition of the Cannes LIONS (International Festival of Creativity) at Palais des Festivals et des Congres, Cannes FRANCE – 19/06/2024
Elon Musk, the Chief Technology Officer of X, has announced a significant move for his companies, SpaceX and X, from California to Texas. The decision comes amid his ongoing concerns about the state’s policies and environment.
In a pair of posts on X Tuesday, Musk revealed that SpaceX’s headquarters would relocate from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. This new site is a company town under development in the southern region of the state. Additionally, the social media platform X will move its headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.
H2: Musk Cites Safety Act as Catalyst
Musk pointed to the recently signed SAFETY Act by California Governor Gavin Newsom as the “final straw” in his decision to relocate. The law prohibits school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wishes to identify by a different gender. Musk expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that this law, along with several others he believes attack both families and companies, prompted the move.
“Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk posted on X.
Family Disputes and Public Scrutiny
One of Musk’s children filed a petition in a California court in 2022 to recognize her new name and gender, expressing a desire to sever ties with her father. Musk has faced criticism for his statements on X regarding gender identity issues.
In a follow-up post, Musk mentioned his frustration with the violent crime in the area surrounding X’s San Francisco office as another factor influencing the move. He emphasized his desire for a safer and more conducive environment for his companies’ operations.
A Longstanding Affinity for Texas
Musk’s inclination towards Texas is not new. In February, SpaceX moved its business incorporation from Delaware to Texas after a Delaware state judge struck down Musk’s 2018 Tesla pay package. The judge sided with a shareholder who deemed it excessive.
In 2021, Musk announced the relocation of Tesla’s headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas. Furthermore, in December 2020, Musk himself moved to Texas, highlighting his growing preference for the Lone Star State.
Conclusion
This move signifies a substantial shift for Musk’s enterprises, underscoring his discontent with California’s policies and his belief in the opportunities Texas presents. CNN has reached out to X, SpaceX, and Governor Newsom’s office for comments on this development.
