The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) Marks Eminem’s 11th Album to Top Billboard’s 200 Albums Chart, Ending Swift’s 12-Week Reign
Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) has officially claimed the Number One spot on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, Billboard confirmed on Sunday, ending Taylor Swift’s 12-week dominance with The Tortured Poets Department.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, The Death of Slim Shady captivated fans, debuting with 281,000 units, including 220 million streams and 114,000 digital downloads, according to Luminate. This achievement marks Eminem’s 11th album to top the Billboard Albums chart.
Eminem’s latest success continues his nearly 30-year streak of chart-topping albums. Excluding his 2022 greatest hits album Curtain Call 2, the last time one of his albums didn’t debut at Number One was with The Slim Shady LP in 1999.
K-Pop group Enhypen’s Romance: Untold debuted at Number 2, while Zach Bryan’s Great American Bar Scene fell to Number 3. The Tortured Poets Department dropped to Number 4, its first time below Number One since its debut.
Beating The Tortured Poets Department is a feat no other artist, including Zach Bryan, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, and Charli XCX, managed since Swift’s album release in April. The Tortured Poets Department remains the best-selling album of the year, with 4.66 million units sold in the first half of 2024, surpassing the combined physical sales of the rest of the top-10 physical releases of 2024.
Anticipating the end of her Number One streak, Swift thanked her fans on social media Saturday, expressing gratitude for their support, stating, “I am completely blown away by what you’ve done – it stayed at #1 for the first 12 weeks of its release and that’s never happened to an album of mine before, not even close!! You’re just the greatest.”
The Death of Slim Shady is the fifth album this year to top Billboard’s chart, following 21 Savage’s American Dream, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures 1, and Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You.
With Eminem now at Number One, the question remains whether he can hold onto the top spot next week, or if Swift’s TTPD will reclaim the crown, or if another contender will rise to the challenge.
