Tesla Recalls Autopilot Software in 2 Million Vehicles – The New York Times
Tesla is recalling over 2 million vehicles in the U.S. to enhance safety features in its Autopilot system, following concerns raised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall, one of the largest in Tesla’s history, aims to ensure drivers pay attention while using Autopilot, addressing the risk of misuse and potential crashes. NHTSA’s investigation, ongoing for over two years, highlighted instances of inadequate driver engagement and controls leading to foreseeable misuse of Autopilot.
The recall covers almost all Tesla vehicles on U.S. roads, with the company planning a software update to reinforce existing controls and alerts, encouraging continuous driver responsibility during Autosteer engagement. While Tesla disagreed with NHTSA’s analysis, the company’s commitment to the recall was acknowledged by Acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson.
U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal welcomed the recall but criticized its delay, emphasizing the need for continued investigations. The update will apply to various Tesla models, and its focus on visual alerts, Autosteer engagement, and additional checks aims to improve overall system safety. The NHTSA intends to keep the Autopilot probe open to monitor Tesla’s remedial actions, emphasizing the importance of driver responsibility in the use of Autopilot.
