Erin Doherty Wins Her First Emmy for Adolescence

2025 Emmy Supporting Actress: Erin Doherty Wins for ‘Adolescence’

Erin Doherty has officially become an Emmy winner. The British actress took home the award for Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 2025 Emmy Awards for her powerful performance in Netflix’s hit drama Adolescence.

In her emotional acceptance speech, Doherty joked,

“It looks like I’ll be talking about Adolescence and Owen Cooper for the rest of my life—and honestly, there are worse things.”

She thanked the entire team behind the show, giving special mention to Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters, calling them “generosity personified.” She also dedicated the award to her sister Grace, saying, “I wouldn’t be here without you. I love you with all my heart.”

A Big Night for Adolescence

Doherty played clinical psychologist Briony Ariston, tasked with interviewing 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by newcomer Owen Cooper), who is accused of murder. The drama swept the Emmys with six wins, including Best Limited Series, Directing, and Writing. Cooper also won Best Supporting Actor, making the night even more memorable for the cast.

Tough Competition

Doherty’s win came against a strong lineup of nominees: Ruth Negga (Presumed Innocent), Deirdre O’Connell (The Penguin), Chloë Sevigny (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Jenny Slate (Dying for Sex), and Christine Tremarco (Adolescence).

Reflecting on Working With Owen Cooper

Before the ceremony, Doherty spoke about what it was like working with Cooper on his very first acting job.
She shared that his natural ability reminded her of why she fell in love with acting in the first place:

“Kids surrender to the moment so much easier than adults do. He reignited that love of the art form in its purest sense.”

Doherty added that watching him grow—both as an actor and as a young person—deeply influenced how she portrayed their on-screen relationship.

This marks Doherty’s first-ever Emmy win, and judging by the emotional response from both fans and critics, it’s unlikely to be her last.
