Cannes Crowd Embraces ‘Fjord’ With Raucous Standing Ovation
The new film Fjord has quickly become one of the most talked-about movies at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, the movie is creating heated discussions because of its sensitive themes involving religion, parenting, immigration, and cultural values.
The drama stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as Mihai and Lisbet, a deeply religious Christian couple raising five children. After moving from Romania to a small village in Norway, the family hopes to build a peaceful new life surrounded by Norway’s beautiful fjords and mountains.
However, tensions quickly grow between the family and the local community. Mihai and Lisbet follow strict Christian values, including mandatory family prayers and conservative beliefs about homosexuality. These views clash with the more liberal mindset of the local school and its headteacher, Mats.

Mihai admits to spanking his children, saying it is more culturally accepted in Romania, even though it is illegal in Norway. While the Christian parents are shown as strict and old-fashioned, the supposedly tolerant liberal characters are also portrayed as judgmental and sometimes hypocritical. The movie especially criticizes Norway’s child-protection system, showing it as cold, bureaucratic, and emotionally insensitive.
Critics are sharply divided over Fjord. Some reviewers have praised it as an intelligent and emotionally gripping film worthy of major awards. Others believe it feels biased, overly political, and lacking in balanced character development. Still, almost everyone agrees that the movie succeeds in starting conversations about parenting, faith, freedom, and modern society.
The film is also another major career milestone for Sebastian Stan, who continues to take bold and challenging roles beyond his famous Marvel character, the Winter Soldier. Many critics now see him as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors.
