Did Selena Gomez and Francia Raísa really fall out after that life-changing kidney transplant? Francia is finally breaking her silence — and what she’s saying might surprise you.
Back in 2017, Francia Raísa, star of How I Met Your Father and Grown-ish, made headlines when she donated a kidney to her longtime friend, Selena Gomez, who was battling lupus. The two shared an incredibly emotional bond, but over the years, fans have speculated that something went wrong between them.
Recently, during an interview with Univision’s “Primer Impacto,” Raísa was asked about the rumored tension — especially reports that she was upset with Selena over her alleged smoking habits post-surgery.
Francia laughed off the claims, saying,
“Well, right now what you’re asking me is nonsense… there are too many rumors. When that came out, I wasn’t even aware of it.”
She emphasized that neither she nor Selena have publicly discussed what really happened between them, adding:
“What you’re asking me are rumors. No one knows what’s going on, and neither she nor I are talking about it. One day, maybe we will.”
In another Spanish-language interview with journalist Magaly Ortiz — filmed just before Selena’s wedding to Benny Blanco — Raísa once again shut down reconciliation questions but spoke kindly about her friend.
“I’m not going to talk about that right now,” she said. “But I do know that she’s getting married, and I’m very happy for her. She has her own life, she’s already a billionaire, and I’m grateful that I was able to do that for her.”
While Taylor Swift and Selena’s Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were confirmed guests at the star-studded wedding, fans quickly noticed Francia’s absence — reigniting chatter about a rift.
Despite the speculation, it’s worth noting that both women have previously spoken fondly of each other. In 2017, Selena called Francia her “beautiful friend” when revealing her transplant surgery on Instagram. Later in 2023, Francia admitted that their friendship had gone through “rocky and tricky times” but said that’s normal for any long-term bond.
“I treat her like my little sister; she treats me like her older sister. No relationship is perfect,” Raísa told Extra TV. “Sometimes, people need to spend time apart to grow. We had to go on our own journeys.”
For now, it seems Francia isn’t closing any doors — just keeping her peace while wishing Selena all the happiness in the world.
Francia Raísa has denied ongoing feud rumors with Selena Gomez, saying that stories about tension — including claims over smoking — are “nonsense.” She wished Selena happiness after her marriage to Benny Blanco, emphasizing that both have grown individually.
