Freaky Friday 2: Curtis and Lohan Swap Bodies Once Again

Lindsay Lohan And Jamie Lee Curtis Are Back To Swap Bodies In ‘Freaky Friday 2’

Production on the long-awaited sequel to 2003’s “Freaky Friday,” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, is officially underway. Disney has just released a behind-the-scenes photo from the set, showing Curtis and Lohan reprising their roles as the body-swapping mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman.

On Monday, Disney shared the image on social media, captioning it with excitement: “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” Fans have eagerly awaited this moment, and the photo confirms that production is in full swing for “Freaky Friday 2.”

Behind the Scenes with Curtis and Lohan

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, “Freaky Friday 2” will follow a now-adult Anna, who is raising a daughter of her own and preparing to become a first-time stepmother. According to the press notes, Tess and Anna will “discover that lightning might indeed strike twice” as they “navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge.”

In addition to Curtis and Lohan, the sequel will see the return of actors Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, and Rosalind Chao, who will reprise their roles from the 2003 film. The ensemble cast is set to bring the same charm and humor that made the original movie a beloved hit.

A Beloved Story Returns

“Freaky Friday,” based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, tells the story of a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies and learn to understand each other’s lives from a new perspective. While the 2003 version with Curtis and Lohan is the most well-known among modern audiences, the story has been adapted multiple times. The first film adaptation was released in 1976, starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, followed by a 1996 version with Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann.

The timeless appeal of “Freaky Friday” also inspired a stage musical adaptation in 2016, which was later produced as a Disney Channel movie in 2018. The enduring popularity of the story speaks to its universal themes of family, empathy, and the often humorous struggle to understand one another.

Anticipation Builds for the Sequel

Both Curtis and Lohan have hinted at the possibility of a sequel in various interviews over the years. In May 2023, Curtis told The New York Times about the widespread interest she encountered while promoting “Halloween Ends.” She said, “As I went around the world with ‘Halloween Ends,’ people wanted to know if there was going to be another ‘Freaky Friday.’ Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’”

Lohan, meanwhile, confirmed on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” in March that a sequel was indeed in the works but kept details under wraps. “I don’t want to say too much. And we’re both excited,” she said. “I’m gonna speak for Jamie.”

Since becoming a mother in July 2023, Lohan has made a notable return to acting after a near-decade hiatus. She starred in the Netflix comedy “Falling for Christmas” in 2022 and had a surprise cameo in the movie musical adaptation of “Mean Girls” earlier this year.

The excitement surrounding “Freaky Friday 2” is palpable as fans eagerly anticipate seeing Curtis and Lohan back on screen together. With production underway and a stellar cast returning, the sequel promises to capture the magic of the original while bringing a fresh perspective to the beloved story. Mark your calendars for 2025, when Tess and Anna Coleman will once again navigate the hilarious and heartfelt challenges of swapping bodies.
