G20 Summit 2023 India: Theme, Schedule, Agenda, Restrictions
The G20 Leaders’ Declaration for the upcoming summit in New Delhi is nearing completion, as stated by India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant. He revealed that the declaration, also known as a joint communique, will emphasize the perspectives of the global south and developing nations. However, specific details will only be disclosed once the leaders accept the document during the summit. Kant acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, although unrelated to the G20’s primary economic focus, has impacted fertilizer and food security discussions within the group.
The conflict in Ukraine has complicated the formation of a communique, with G20 nations failing to issue joint statements during the Indian presidency. The United States expressed its willingness to collaborate with India on crafting a communique. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated for the inclusion of the African Union in the G20, a proposal that received positive responses from other leaders.
Key priorities during India’s G20 presidency include sustainable and inclusive growth, climate finance, digital public infrastructure, energy transition, health, education, and international peace. Kant highlighted the significance of accelerating sustainable development goals and India’s role in revolutionizing digital payments.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra emphasized the goal of achieving consensus among G20 leaders regarding their priorities. Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about productive discussions during the summit, aiming for human-centric and inclusive development. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also met to discuss key G20 priorities and bilateral cooperation.
