Halsey Channels Britney Spears in Y2K-Inspired Video for ‘Lucky’

Halsey Channels Britney Spears in Gia Coppola-Directed ‘Lucky’ Video

Halsey’s new music video for her Britney Spears-interpolated song “Lucky” draws inspiration from more than just Spears’ 2000 hit of the same name. Directed by Gia Coppola (“Palo Alto,” “Mainstream”) with cinematography by Alexis Zabe (“The Florida Project”), the Y2K-themed video captures the highs and lows of Spears’ life in the spotlight.

In the video, Halsey plays the lead role, with actor Simon Rex making a cameo as her love interest. The narrative mirrors scenes from Spears’ original “Lucky” music video, following the duality of a young girl idolizing Halsey, who, behind the scenes, struggles with her relationship and health.

“I shaved my head four times because I wanted to and then I did it one more time cause I got sick,” Halsey sings. “I thought I changed so much nobody would notice shit, and no one did. Then I left the doctor’s office full of tears / Became a single mom at my premiere / I told everybody I was fine for a whole damn year, and that’s the biggest lie of my career.”

Ahead of the single’s release, Halsey revealed that Britney Spears had been involved in the process and gave her blessing to the song. Halsey, who was recently diagnosed with Lupus SLE, shared that she is managing the autoimmune disease and is in remission.

To tease “Lucky,” Halsey used staged paparazzi photos and fake tabloids on social media. Produced by Michael Uzowuru (Frank Ocean, SZA, Rosalia), the song features an interpolation of Spears’ “Lucky” and the instrumental of “Angel of Mine,” originally by Eternal and popularized by Monica.

“Lucky” is set to be part of Halsey’s upcoming fifth studio album, her first since 2021’s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross-produced “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.”
