Halsey Reveals Private Health Battle and New Album
The singer-songwriter Halsey dives deep into her personal battles with illness in her latest single, “The End,” which debuted on Tuesday. This emotional ballad serves as the first release from her forthcoming, untitled fifth album, highlighting a poignant intersection of love and health challenges.
Following the acclaimed 2021 album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power,” the Grammy nominee’s new track narrates a haunting journey through health issues and a relationship shaped by the specter of mortality.
Halsey had initially teased the release of “The End” on Instagram, where she shared snippets of her ongoing medical struggles. These posts, some showing her in visible pain with medical tape on her arm, revealed a battle she had not publicly discussed before. In a subsequent Instagram update on Wednesday, Halsey disclosed her 2022 diagnoses of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
“Both conditions are currently managed or in remission, but they are lifelong challenges,” Halsey wrote. “After a tough beginning, I slowly regained control with the help of incredible doctors. Now, two years later, I’m feeling better and more grateful than ever for my music. I can’t wait to return to my fans.”
Halsey’s Health Revelation and Musical Journey
In her posts, Halsey expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support from her fans since she first shared her health story.
“Long story short, I’m lucky to be alive. Long story long, I wrote an album. It begins with ‘The End.’ Out now,” she captioned her Tuesday Instagram post. The post included a video of her massaging her painful calves and sitting in an infusion chair, starting her treatment. Another video offered a glimpse into various hospital visits over time.
In conjunction with the single’s release, Halsey announced donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance, tagging both organizations in her Instagram caption.
Leukemia and lymphoma are distinct cancers of the blood and lymphatic system, respectively. Lupus, an autoimmune disease, causes the immune system to attack healthy tissues, potentially affecting joints, skin, circulation, and various organs. T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders can manifest in different forms, including leukemia and lymphoma, as noted by the National Institutes of Health.
In the opening verse of “The End,” Halsey poignantly sings, “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick/ Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks/ And then they lay it on me/ And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain/ And I don’t like to complain, but I’m saying sorry.”
Halsey has previously shared details about her health struggles, including her 2022 diagnoses of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). She noted that she and her doctors were still investigating a potential autoimmune link.
Music and Resilience
Halsey’s latest revelations underline the resilience and determination she brings to her music. Despite her health challenges, she remains committed to her craft and her fans, channeling her experiences into her art. “The End” stands as a testament to her strength and a preview of what promises to be an impactful fifth album.
As she continues to navigate her health journey, Halsey’s openness about her struggles provides inspiration and hope to many, showcasing the power of music as a form of healing and expression.
