Vice President Kamala Harris has declared that she “will not be silent” about the suffering in Gaza, emphasizing her “serious concern” during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Harris called for an immediate ceasefire deal amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Following her meeting with Netanyahu at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, Harris spoke to reporters, stressing the importance of how Israel defends itself. She highlighted the devastating impact on Gaza over the past nine months, particularly focusing on the tragic images of dead children and displaced, desperate people. Harris insisted that these tragedies must not be ignored or become routine.
Balancing her support for Israel with a firm stance on ending the war, Harris conveyed the necessity for a US-backed ceasefire and hostage deal, emphasizing the need for Israel’s security, the release of hostages, and the end of Palestinian suffering. She underlined the right of the Palestinian people to freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
Harris noted “hopeful movement” in the ceasefire talks and urged Netanyahu to finalize the deal. Addressing the calls for peace and a ceasefire, she acknowledged and supported the public’s desire for an end to the conflict.
The vice president reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to bringing home American hostages held in Gaza, listing their names and stressing the importance of their safe return. In her concluding remarks, Harris emphasized that the Gaza conflict is complex and urged condemnation of terrorism, violence, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate, calling for unity in addressing these issues.
