Hollywood stuffs itself with largest Thanksgiving box office ever – Destructoid
The Thanksgiving Eve box office reflects a subdued holiday season for Hollywood, marked by underwhelming performances of major releases. Disney’s “Wish,” a $200 million animated film, garnered a lackluster $8.3 million on Wednesday, signaling challenges for Disney’s animation and Marvel divisions. Apple’s “Napoleon,” a Ridley Scott epic with a $200 million budget, secured second place with $7.7 million but faces scrutiny in a movie industry adapting to streaming dynamics.
Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” claimed third place with $7.3 million, aiming for a $40 million five-day total. Despite its economical $100 million budget, it competes strongly against costlier productions. Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together” took fourth place, earning $5.1 million and projecting a $27 million total. TriStar and Spyglass Media’s “Thanksgiving” ranked fifth, grossing $1.8 million and targeting $10.1 million over five days.
“The Marvels,” a Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, struggled with a $1.5 million Wednesday earning, bringing its total to $69.1 million. The overall Thanksgiving holiday is forecasted to generate nearly $190 million, falling short of pre-pandemic levels in 2019 and 2018, emphasizing the industry’s ongoing recovery challenges.
