Israel Expresses Regret Over Deadly Strike on Gaza’s Only Catholic Church

Israel says it ‘deeply regrets’ strike on Catholic church in Gaza that killed 3 – ABC News

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed deep regret after an Israeli military strike accidentally hit the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, killing three civilians and injuring several others. The victims were sheltering inside the church, hoping for safety amid the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, Netanyahu said, “Every innocent life lost is a tragedy. We share in the grief of the families and the faithful.” He confirmed that the incident is under investigation and emphasized Israel’s commitment to protecting both civilians and religious sites.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) explained that the damage appears to have come from shell fragments during military operations nearby. They said the church was not a target, and that the situation is still being reviewed. The IDF added, “We direct our strikes solely at military targets and do everything we can to avoid harm to civilians and places of worship.”

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which oversees the church, confirmed the casualties and injuries, including the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli. The Church called the attack heartbreaking, noting that many had sought refuge there after losing their homes.

Pope Leo XIV also responded, saying he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and renewed his call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly had a “negative reaction” to the news of the attack. According to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, Trump called Netanyahu, who told him the strike was a “mistake.”

The Latin Patriarchate called for an end to the violence, saying, “People turned to the church as a sanctuary, believing it would protect them from the horrors of war. Now, even that hope is gone.”
