Italian Motorcycle Market Rebounds in 2026 as Challenger Brands Gain Ground

Italy’s motorcycle market is recovering — but the real story is the brands gaining ground.

Italy’s motorcycle and scooter market is showing fresh signs of life in 2026.

After falling 8.1% in 2025, the market has returned to growth. Sales reached 296,671 units during the first eight months of 2026, an increase of 8.2% over the same period last year.

But there is more to this recovery than the headline number.

The interesting story is happening underneath it. Traditional market leaders such as Honda, Piaggio and Yamaha remain strong in volume, but several challenger brands are growing much faster.

What Is Driving Italy’s Motorcycle Market Recovery?

Italy’s two-wheeler market has expanded significantly since the pandemic.

Sales reached 393,942 units in 2024, the highest level in the period covered by the latest data. The market then corrected to 361,937 units in 2025.

The 2026 recovery suggests that the previous decline may have been a correction rather than a return to the older market size.

The first eight months of 2026 have already produced almost 82% of the entire 2025 volume.

To surpass the 2025 total, the industry needs roughly another 65,300 registrations from September through December.

That makes the final months of 2026 particularly important.

Established Leaders Are Growing Slowly

Honda continues to lead the Italian market, but its sales are up only 1.3%.

Piaggio is flat, while Yamaha has grown just 1.0%. Kymco is up 2.0%, and SYM has increased 8.6%.

This creates an important contrast.

The overall market is growing 8.2%, but several of its largest brands are growing much more slowly.

That means a considerable portion of the additional demand is being captured elsewhere.

Challenger Brands Are Changing the Competitive Picture

Voge is one of the clearest examples.

The brand has increased Italian sales by 49.1%, while Zontes has surged 80.7%. QJ Motor is also growing at 16.5%.

These are no longer simply small-volume newcomers.

Voge’s broader international performance reinforces the trend. Its global sales were up 43.2% through July 2026, with strong growth reported across several European markets.

The message is becoming difficult to ignore: Chinese motorcycle manufacturers are increasingly competing for mainstream European customers, not just entry-level buyers.

European Brands Show a Mixed Picture

The European manufacturers are producing very different results.

KTM’s Italian sales are up an impressive 84.1%, while Aprilia has grown 34.3%.

At the same time, Ducati is down 13.0%, BMW has declined 9.0%, and Triumph is down 5.8%.

So this is not simply a story of Japanese versus European versus Chinese manufacturers.

It is a story of different brands responding differently to changing consumer demand.

Electric Motorcycles Are Growing Too

Electric two-wheelers are also moving upward.

Italy recorded 6,823 electric motorcycle and scooter sales through August 2026, up 16.5% year on year. That is roughly twice the growth rate of the overall market.

However, there is an important qualification.

Electric models still account for only 2.3% of total two-wheeler sales.

So electric mobility is growing faster, but it has not yet become a mainstream force in Italy’s motorcycle market.

Ravi’s Perspective

The most revealing part of Italy’s 2026 motorcycle story is not the 8.2% growth itself.

It is where that growth is going.

Honda, Piaggio and Yamaha continue to command strong positions. Yet brands such as Voge, Zontes, KTM and Aprilia are expanding much faster.

If this pattern continues, Italy could see meaningful changes in market share even while the traditional leaders remain at the top.

For buyers, that means more choice.

For established manufacturers, it means greater competitive pressure.

And for the motorcycle industry as a whole, Italy’s 2026 recovery could mark the beginning of a new competitive phase rather than simply a return to the old market.

The numbers tell us that the Italian motorcycle market is recovering. The brand-level data tell us that the market itself is changing.
