Jaishankar EAM India Meets UN Secretary-General Guterres Discusses India’s G20 Presidency President 78th General Assembly Session Dennis Francis
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing India’s stance on terrorism and global order. He asserted that responding to terrorism and extremism based on political convenience is not acceptable. Jaishankar called for respect for the rules-based order and the UN Charter, while also urging nations not to interfere in each other’s internal affairs. His remarks have been interpreted as a veiled criticism of both Canada and China amid ongoing diplomatic tensions.
The India-Canada diplomatic row was highlighted, with India denying allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India accused Canada of ignoring terror threats originating from its territory and criticized its failure to act on evidence of criminal activities by individuals in Canada.
Jaishankar’s speech was seen as a jab at China, particularly concerning the border dispute in eastern Ladakh. India has consistently emphasized the importance of peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control. The speech also referenced China’s obstruction of India’s efforts to designate certain individuals as terrorists at the UN.
On Pakistan, India responded firmly to Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar’s comments on Kashmir at the General Assembly, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir are integral parts of India and that Pakistan has no standing to comment on these matters.
Additionally, Jaishankar advocated for India’s permanent seat on the UN Security Council, citing India’s role in representing the Global South and the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 Summit. He called for the Security Council to become more contemporary.
