Rohit Sharma (L) and Hardik Pandya
Jasprit Bumrah has opened up about the controversy surrounding the Mumbai Indians’ decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain for IPL 2024. Despite the initial backlash and poor team performance, Bumrah emphasized the team’s unwavering support for Pandya during challenging times.
The controversy began when the Mumbai Indians chose Hardik Pandya over Rohit Sharma as captain, a move that displeased some fans. As the team’s performance faltered, Pandya faced harsh criticism, including boos from the Wankhede Stadium crowd. However, his reputation was redeemed after he played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory.
In a candid conversation at the Indian Express Adda, Bumrah expressed his thoughts on the situation. “In our country, emotions run high. Fans and players alike are deeply passionate, and it can be disheartening when your own fans criticize you. But you have to take it in stride. It’s not easy to ignore, especially when you can hear the boos,” he said.
Bumrah highlighted the importance of a strong support system, both within the team and from family. “Our inner circle was crucial. The team didn’t encourage the negativity. We stood by Hardik, offering support and encouragement. His family was also a constant source of strength. The narrative changed when we won the World Cup,” he added.
Reflecting on the nature of sports, Bumrah remarked, “You can’t take praise or criticism too seriously. The narrative can change quickly. Every sportsman faces ups and downs, and being booed is part of the journey. It’s not always fair, but it’s reality. We live a privileged life with many positives in our sport.”
Bumrah concluded by emphasizing the team’s solidarity. “We never leave a teammate behind. We support each other, whether it’s a seasoned player like Hardik or a newcomer. It’s us against the world, and we strive to help each other through tough times.”
