Jeep Unveils Electric Off-Roader: Wagoneer S Trailhawk Concept
In New York today, Jeep unveiled its first fully electric SUV for the North American market. While all eyes were on the $71,995 Wagoneer S, Jeep also introduced an off-road-capable Trailhawk concept of the same EV, proudly perched on 31.5-inch tires.
The forest green SUV features several enhancements over the standard Wagoneer S. These include a laser-cut roof rack, 3D-printed tow hooks, lifted suspension, wheel caps, and numerous other features designed for off-road enthusiasts and gearheads.
Sitting Pretty on 31.5-Inch Tires
Trailhawk is Jeep’s designation for its most rugged off-road vehicles, known for their durable equipment and materials. Trailhawk vehicles are often trail-rated, meaning they have passed rigorous tests for maneuverability, articulation, and ground clearance. With the Wagoneer S Trailhawk concept, Jeep aims to extend these capabilities to its emerging battery-electric segment.
The Trailhawk concept incorporates many of the same features as the Wagoneer S, enhancing them further. In addition to the all-terrain 31.5-inch tires, the concept sits on a lifted suspension for improved ground clearance. Tow hooks are embedded in the front and rear, and functional air extractors are designed for high-pressure environments. The hood decal is anti-glare, the badging is flush with the vehicle, and the dual-panel panoramic sunroof allows in fresh air or trail dust.
Jeep’s five driver modes for the Wagoneer S gain a sixth mode in the Trailhawk concept: Rock. The mode selector, emergency red in the center console, allows for easy switching. The octagonal-shaped steering wheel has special grips at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions for better control during challenging off-road moments.
Electric off-roading is not a novel concept. Brands like Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Rivian market their electric trucks as capable on gravel as they are on pavement. The annual King of the Hammers off-roading competition even includes a segment for battery-powered rock crawlers. Jeep, known for its rugged vehicles, introducing a plug-in version makes perfect sense.
The company hasn’t committed to putting the Trailhawk concept into production. However, during today’s event, executives hinted strongly that the off-roader would eventually become a real EV. Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa mentioned that the Wagoneer S would come in several trims, with the fully loaded Launch Edition debuting first.
The introduction of the Wagoneer S Trailhawk concept marks a significant step for Jeep as it ventures into the electric off-roading segment. The vehicle’s impressive features and rugged design indicate Jeep’s commitment to maintaining its off-road legacy while embracing new, sustainable technologies.
