Long Walks Boost Heart Health and Extend Lifespan, New Study Finds

Many people enjoy long walks, but few realize they may hold the key to living longer.
A new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that adults who walk for more than ten minutes at a stretch face a much lower risk of heart disease and early death than those who take shorter walks.

Dr. Borja del Pozo Cruz, the study’s lead author from Universidad Europea de Madrid, explained that how we walk matters as much as how much we walk. “Even if you don’t hit 10,000 steps a day, taking fewer but longer walks can improve heart health and longevity,” he said.

Physical inactivity remains a global problem. Around 31% of adults fail to meet the World Health Organization’s guideline of 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A sedentary life raises the risk of heart disease, sleep issues, and early death.

“Everyone benefits from walking. But these results are most important for people taking fewer than 8,000 steps a day,” said del Pozo Cruz.

Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention at National Jewish Health in Denver, added that endurance builds gradually. “Most people can walk five minutes without effort. But when you walk 20, 30, or 60 minutes, it gets harder. That’s the capacity we must develop,” he said.

Regular walking strengthens muscles, improves oxygen use, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and balances blood sugar. “Longer walks boost circulation and heart function,” del Pozo Cruz said.

He compared walking endurance to strength training. “You can’t lift a 100-pound weight without training. The same is true for building cardiac strength,” Freeman noted.

Counting steps can feel stressful. Instead, researchers suggest focusing on duration—how long you walk continuously. “Pace helps, but consistency and duration matter more. Aim for a few uninterrupted walking sessions each day,” del Pozo Cruz advised.

Good walking form supports these benefits. Stand tall, keep your shoulders back, and swing your arms naturally. Walking is a full-body movement that improves posture, breathing, and balance.

The message is simple: take longer, steady walks each day. Over time, your heart will thank you with better health and a longer life.
