Four More Arrested in Dramatic Louvre Crown Jewel Heist Investigation
Four new suspects are now in custody in the Louvre jewel theft case. Police detained them in Paris on Tuesday. The group includes two men aged 38 and 39 and two women aged 31 and 40. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau released the details in a short statement.
These arrests follow the detention of four other suspects in late October. Investigators will question all eight. The prosecutor has not shared new information about possible charges. BFMTV reported that one of the recent detainees is believed to be the fourth member of the gang that entered the museum. Three suspects arrested in October face charges for organized robbery. A woman from that group faces charges for aiding the crime.
The robbery took place on October 19 in the Apollo Gallery on the Louvre’s upper floor. This room displays the French crown jewels. The thieves reached the gallery through a window after raising a ladder mounted on a truck. They broke into two secure display cases and took nine items. These included a diamond and sapphire set once worn by Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense.
The group spent only seven minutes inside. The stolen items may exceed a value of $100 million. One piece did not stay with them. The imperial crown of Empress Eugénie slipped from their hands as they fled. The crown holds 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds.
The jewels have not been found. Investigators are still searching for them. Some experts fear the thieves may have melted the pieces to hide their origin. Others believe the quick arrests reduce that risk.
