Marketa Vondrousova is Wimbledon’s first unseeded female champion after beating Ons Jabeur – The Morning Call
Marketa Vondrousova, ranked 42nd in the world, made history by becoming the lowest-ranked and first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon. The 24-year-old left-hander from the Czech Republic defeated Ons Jabeur, the 2022 runner-up, with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the final. Vondrousova’s victory was remarkable as she was the first unseeded woman in 60 years to reach the Wimbledon final.
Playing under the closed retractable roof on the main stadium, Vondrousova’s smooth lefty strokes found their mark, while Jabeur’s shots showed signs of tension. Despite trailing in each set, Vondrousova rallied and won the last four games of the first set and the last three games of the second set.
This triumph marks Vondrousova’s first Grand Slam title, following her loss in the 2019 French Open final. On the other hand, Jabeur, a 28-year-old from Tunisia, dropped to 0-3 in major finals. She remains the only Arab woman and the only North African woman to have reached this stage in singles at any Grand Slam tournament.
Vondrousova’s path to victory was unexpected, considering her previous record at Wimbledon and her low ranking in 2022. She had a 1-4 win-loss record at Wimbledon before going undefeated in this tournament. The match witnessed Jabeur’s struggles, resulting in numerous unforced errors, allowing Vondrousova to dominate and claim the title.
Despite a brief comeback attempt by Jabeur in the second set, Vondrousova maintained her composure and sealed the victory. The crowd was supportive of Jabeur’s spirited play, but ultimately, Vondrousova’s exceptional performance led her to her first Wimbledon win, culminating in a moment of pure joy as she fell to the grass in celebration.
