Sudan: Paramilitary RSF Accused of Killing 2,000 Civilians in El-Fasher| Firstpost Africa| N18G –
Gist:
The massacre in El Fasher marks one of the darkest moments in Sudan’s ongoing war. With mounting video evidence, satellite confirmation, and survivor testimonies, the global community is demanding action against the Rapid Support Forces for crimes against civilians.
Rebels Accused of Mass Killing Hundreds in El Fasher
Videos circulating online show Sudanese rebel fighters executing civilians inside El Fasher University’s Medical Laboratory School in Darfur. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly took control of the city on Sunday. Satellite images and eyewitness accounts confirm widespread killings.
The World Health Organization reported that more than 460 people were killed at the nearby Saudi Hospital. The Sudan Doctors Network said RSF fighters “killed everyone they found inside,” including patients and companions. Images of the hospital show bodies scattered on the ground and blood-soaked areas.
Reports of mass killings surfaced soon after the Sudanese army withdrew from the city. Videos, survivor testimonies, and satellite evidence all point to large-scale executions.
RSF Leadership Admits “Violations”
RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, said on Wednesday that an inquiry would be launched to identify and punish those responsible. Yet the group denied killing civilians, calling the reports “fabricated,” even as evidence grew.
The conflict, now in its third year, has already killed over 150,000 people. The two main factions — Sudan’s Armed Forces led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF under Hemedti — once shared power after a 2021 coup but turned against each other in 2023.
Both the United Nations and the United States have accused the two sides of committing war crimes.
Civilians Trapped in a “Kill Box”
About 120,000 people, half of them children, remain trapped in El Fasher, according to UN officials. The RSF surrounded the city with an earth wall nearly nine feet high. Nathaniel Raymond of Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab described the situation as “a kill box,” saying civilians were “systematically walled in to be killed.”
Videos filmed by RSF fighters show civilians pleading before being shot. Some clips capture rebels celebrating beside piles of bodies. Other footage shows RSF vehicles chasing people across open ground while shouting “catch the girls.”
Aid workers confirm accounts of rape and sexual violence against fleeing women and girls. Survivors arriving in Tawila told of executions, looting, and torture.
Missing Men and Widespread Abductions
Humanitarian agencies report thousands fleeing to Tawila, mostly women and children. Many said men were abducted or killed because of their ethnicity. UNICEF officials said several women arrived alone, claiming their husbands and sons were executed or detained.
The Sudan Doctors Network reported that RSF fighters kidnapped six medical workers, including four doctors. The abductors are demanding a ransom of 100 million Sudanese pounds per person.
Global Calls for Accountability
International groups and rights organizations are demanding an immediate ceasefire and independent investigation. UNICEF’s Sheldon Yett said the fighters’ own videos show “a lack of accountability.”
He added, “They are going house to house, dragging people out. They demand payment or kill. All violations of international law must be investigated, and those responsible must face justice.”
