Hawkins County man completes Appalachian Trail
Charles Grubb, a Hawkins County man, has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing the entire Appalachian Trail. He accomplished this feat on his 56th birthday, beginning his journey in 2012. The Appalachian Trail stretches approximately 2,200 miles along the East Coast. Grubb’s dedication to this endeavor was such that he would take a week off work to hike sections of the trail, earning him the title of a “section hiker.”
Despite facing skepticism from others who couldn’t understand his passion for spending time in the woods, Grubb found a supportive community of fellow hikers along the trail. He offered advice to potential section hikers, suggesting that moving north more swiftly might have enabled him to complete the trail in just five years, instead of the 11 it took due to the impact of COVID-19.
During his journey, Grubb acquired the affectionate nickname “Grubb-Worm” from fellow Appalachian Trail hikers. His story showcases determination, resilience, and a love for nature, serving as an inspiring example for those who dream of undertaking such an extraordinary adventure.
