Miley Cyrus, best known for her role as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel, recently reflected on her past, offering an apology to Mickey Mouse for her rebellious phase that followed her Disney days.
The “Flowers” singer received the Disney Legend award at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, where she gave an emotional acceptance speech.
“I’m about to share a Disney Legend secret,” Cyrus began. “Legends get scared too. I’m scared right now, but the difference is we push through the fear. That’s what makes us legendary, and it’s something all of you can do every single day.”
In her speech, Cyrus humorously recalled, “Back in 2005, Disney was on a mission to reinvent itself. That’s why they hired Bob Iger and me,” she joked. She reminisced about the buzz during the Hannah Montana audition process, quipping, “I wasn’t created in a lab, but if I was, there must have been a glitch because I malfunctioned somewhere between 2013 and 2016. Sorry, Mickey.”
After her time as the wholesome Disney Channel star, Cyrus embarked on a journey to reinvent her image, leading to controversy with her provocative performances and public appearances. One of the most notable moments was her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance where she twerked on Robin Thicke during “Blurred Lines.”
Alongside Cyrus, other Disney Legends honored at the event included Angela Bassett, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Williams, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, and Harrison Ford.
In tribute to Cyrus, Lainey Wilson performed “The Best of Both Worlds,” the iconic Hannah Montana theme song.
