Canada-India trade mission postponed amid strained ties | CTV News
The relationship between Canada and India has faced significant challenges in recent months, reaching a critical juncture. Historically, their ties were characterized by trade and a sizable Indian diaspora in Canada, particularly the Sikh community, which comprises 2.1% of Canada’s population. Tensions began in 2015 when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Sikh ministers to his cabinet, and Sikh Canadians expressed support for the Khalistan movement, advocating for a Sikh homeland in India. Trudeau’s trip to India in 2018, including an encounter with a convicted Sikh extremist, further strained relations.
However, both countries sought to enhance ties to counterbalance China’s influence in the region. Until recently, relations were relatively positive, with discussions about a trade agreement on automobiles, agriculture, and technology. Yet, recent developments have led to a deterioration in relations. Canada canceled a trade mission to India, signaling deepening tensions.
The critical turning point came when Trudeau accused New Delhi of involvement in the assassination of Sikh Canadian leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada expelled an Indian diplomat, and India retaliated, escalating the conflict. Experts believe that Canada’s alignment with its allies to condemn Nijjar’s murder privately while avoiding public confrontation with India at the G-20 summit indicates the international implications of this dispute.
The Biden Administration faces a challenging balancing act, as taking sides may alienate one of these important partners. Meanwhile, India may demand retractions, downgrade relations, or reduce security at the Canadian embassy, further straining diplomatic ties. The future of the Canada-India relationship remains uncertain, with a return to the previous normal appearing unlikely in the near term.
