Nepal earthquake: At least 157 killed | CTV News
A deadly earthquake struck northwestern Nepal on November 4, 2023, resulting in at least 157 fatalities and numerous injuries. The earthquake measured a magnitude of 5.6, originating 26 miles from Jumla, Nepal, and reached a shallow depth of 18 kilometers. The tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, India. The police and officials were primarily engaged in search and rescue operations, making it challenging to estimate the full extent of collapsed and damaged structures. In some villages, up to 90% of houses were reported to have collapsed.
Jajarkot district, near the earthquake’s epicenter, suffered the highest casualties with 105 fatalities and 55 injuries. Nearby Rukum West district reported 52 deaths and 85 injuries. This earthquake was the deadliest since 2015, when Nepal experienced a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, causing significant damage and loss of life.
The hilly terrain and remote location near the epicenter complicated rescue efforts, and officials feared that the casualty count could increase as communication was established with these areas. Aftershocks forced residents to spend the night outdoors due to concerns about the structural integrity of their homes.
Earthquakes are common in Nepal, situated at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, giving rise to the Himalayan mountain range. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the earthquake victims and offered assistance, emphasizing solidarity with Nepal during this tragedy
