Northern Ireland has witnessed a fresh wave of unrest, prompting strong condemnation from UK officials. Hilary Benn, the UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, described the recent violence in Belfast as “racist thuggery” after two nights of anti-immigration disturbances in the city.
The unrest has raised serious concerns across the region, which endured decades of conflict known as “The Troubles” before the landmark Good Friday Agreement helped bring peace in 1998.
Although authorities reported that violence eased on Wednesday night compared to previous days, tensions remained high. Groups involved in the disturbances reportedly targeted a hotel that had previously been used to accommodate asylum seekers. Police officers were also involved in clashes with protesters.
Speaking to Sky News, Benn said the incidents could only be described as racist because people were being targeted based on the color of their skin. He also expressed concern about the fear and anxiety created within local communities.
The violence followed a stabbing incident on Monday in which a Somali-born asylum seeker allegedly attacked a man in Belfast. The suspect, Sudanese national Hadi Alodid, has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody. Authorities have clarified that the case is not being treated as terrorism. The next court hearing is scheduled for July 8.
Police have arrested 16 people in connection with the disorder so far. Senior officers believe that much of the unrest was encouraged and coordinated through social media, with some online activity reportedly originating both inside and outside Northern Ireland. Investigators are considering possible legal action against individuals responsible for inflammatory online posts.
Meanwhile, the victim of the stabbing, Stephen Ogilvie, is said to be recovering. His family has appealed for calm and urged people not to respond with violence, stating that such actions are “not welcome.”
The recent events have revived painful memories of Northern Ireland’s troubled past, when sectarian conflict between Irish nationalists and pro-British loyalists claimed thousands of lives. Political leaders are now calling for unity, restraint, and respect as authorities work to restore peace and stability.
